A fitted wardrobe is only successful if the bedroom works around it. You still need space to get dressed, open drawers, reach the window and move comfortably beside the bed. Use the actual bed dimensions, including the frame and headboard, rather than the mattress size alone. Plot bedside furniture, door swings and the route from the entrance. The depth available for a wardrobe needs to be assessed alongside those everyday movements.

In a compact room, more cabinetry is not automatically better. A shorter run with useful internals can make the room easier to live in than a larger wardrobe that restricts access. Think about the view from the bed as well as the view through the door.

An inventory is a useful design tool. Separate long hanging from shorter garments, folded clothes from items you keep in drawers, and daily footwear from occasional pairs. Shared wardrobes do not have to be symmetrical inside if the two people using them need different storage.

• ◆Measure longer coats or dresses before choosing hanging heights.
• ◆Decide which items must be easy to reach and which can sit higher up.
• ◆Allow a sensible home for luggage, spare bedding or seasonal clothing.
• ◆Consider where laundry and accessories belong in the room.

A good interior makes the usable space visible and accessible. Extra rails or fittings have little value if they make the cupboard awkward to use.

Bedside joinery, a dressing table, a desk or a chest of drawers may work better when their proportions and finish relate to the wardrobes. They do not all need to match, but the room should have a clear balance of furniture and open space.

Discuss sockets, switches and lighting before the furniture details are settled. A bedside unit should not conceal an outlet you need every evening, and wardrobe lighting needs a considered route for power and access.

Photograph the whole room, including alcoves, radiators and any sloping ceiling. Tell us which furniture will remain and what is missing from the current storage. A rough plan, wardrobe inventory and spending range give us a useful starting point.
