Decide which features should lead

Look at the elements that give the room its character: the window proportions, a fireplace, a ceiling detail or the connection to a hall. Decide which should remain prominent and where the kitchen can provide a quieter background. Not every wall needs a tall cabinet.

In a room where old and new meet, a simple contemporary elevation can sit comfortably beside existing detailing. A framed painted kitchen may also work, provided the scale of the doors and mouldings is considered against the room rather than selected in isolation.

Resolve awkward geometry in the drawings

Walls and corners may not be square, and the room’s usable dimensions can change once finishes are removed or replaced. The design needs to account for those conditions, including how panels and worktops meet the walls.

A chimney breast or alcove can affect cabinet depth and the working route. Resist treating every recess as a cupboard by default. One may suit shelves, another may be better left open to keep the elevation balanced.

Connect an extension with the original house

If the kitchen moves into a rear extension, review the approach from the existing rooms. A large island may look balanced from the glazing but block the view or route from the hall. Check the plan from both directions and consider how dining furniture occupies the space.

The junction between old and new flooring, changes of level and structural openings can affect furniture positions. Discuss these with the wider project team early. The kitchen design can respond to the building scheme while choices are still open.
