When a kitchen has to accommodate cooking, storage and a route through the house, every cabinet decision matters. For Harborne kitchen projects, we begin with the usable space: where people stand, which doors open into it and what needs to stay clear. Posh Design designs and makes the cabinetry at our Birmingham workshop.

You may be keeping the existing footprint or bringing a rear room into the kitchen. Either way, a useful brief explains the compromises you want to remove before it describes the finish you want to buy.

( Planning your room )

Improve the room without filling it

In a compact kitchen, adding cupboards to every wall can make the worktop feel enclosed without solving storage. Assess which items need quick access and which can move to less prominent positions. A carefully planned tall cupboard may let another wall stay visually lighter.

Draw the route from the entrance to the garden, dining area or utility. The plan needs to work when someone is cooking, not just when the fronts are closed. A small layout change can be more valuable than squeezing in another unit.

Compare a peninsula with an island

A peninsula can provide preparation space or casual seating while using the edge of the room. An island needs circulation on every side. If the island only fits with narrow routes or stools pushed permanently underneath it, compare the two options before deciding.

Also test a plan without either. A clear stretch of worktop and a dining table can create a more comfortable kitchen in the available space. The right answer comes from your dimensions and routines, rather than from a feature checklist.

Plan storage that stays easy to reach

Consider deep drawers for the things you would otherwise lift out of a low cupboard. Give trays and chopping boards a practical slot, and put everyday food where labels remain visible. Check how each cupboard opens relative to the next one.

Wall cupboards and open shelves each have a role. Closed storage can hide busy everyday contents, while a small open section can keep a useful item close at hand. Decide what would actually live on the shelves before giving up enclosed space.

Bring access and building work into the brief

For a replacement kitchen, explain how materials can reach the room and where the team can work during fitting. If you are planning a rear extension, bring the latest layout and the builder’s intended programme. Agree room preparation and installation responsibilities before work begins.

Yes. Start by assessing the existing room and what the layout can do better. Bespoke cabinetry may improve storage and fit, but it still needs enough space for comfortable use and appliance access.

There is no useful answer from the room label alone. Test the actual dimensions, opening fronts and seating positions. A peninsula or a clear perimeter layout may be the stronger option.

Show each wall, the entrance, windows and the route to adjoining spaces. Add close-ups of awkward corners or features to retain, and explain which appliances or furniture you plan to keep.
