Choose the layout for your household

Begin with the relationship between cooking, storage and the table. If the kitchen is used by several people at once, make access to drinks, breakfast food and everyday crockery possible without passing through the main preparation area.

If this is a replacement kitchen, consider whether the current services are in sensible positions before proposing to move them. If it is a new room or extension, assess the kitchen alongside doors, glazing and the route to the rest of the house. These decisions shape the furniture more than a cabinet colour does.

Make the quotation describe the whole scope

Agree the cabinetry and its internal fittings alongside worktops, appliances and installation responsibilities. A proposal is easier to understand when it identifies the elements still to be chosen and the work to be handled by others.

Workshop manufacture and the site programme need to line up. If a builder is preparing the room, share the intended sequence and identify the point at which finished measurements can be confirmed. Access, storage and deliveries also need a practical plan.

A general lead-time estimate is not a fitting date. Ask for the programme that applies to your agreed design, materials and site conditions, and discuss what happens if another part of the renovation moves.
