A fitted kitchen earns its place in a home through the things you notice every day: a drawer that holds the pans you actually use, a clear route past the dishwasher, a worktop where two people can prepare dinner comfortably. Begin with the awkward parts of the existing kitchen. Perhaps the fridge blocks the entrance, the corner cupboards swallow things, or an island separates you from the people at the table. Replacing those units with a more expensive finish will leave the same frustrations. The design needs to deal with movement, preparation space and storage before the front style is settled.

A measured plan should show the room with doors, drawers and appliances open. It should also account for skirting, uneven walls, window positions and the junction with the floor. These quieter details determine whether the fitted kitchen looks comfortably part of the house.

A beautiful door is only part of the furniture. Look inside: how deep are the drawers, where are the adjustable shelves, and how will the tall storage be used? Specify storage around what belongs in it, including baking trays, recycling, small appliances and the food you buy regularly.

Put your budget into the parts that improve daily use first. A better drawer arrangement or a generous uninterrupted preparation area can matter more than another decorative feature.

For a replacement kitchen, discuss which services and finishes can stay. For an extension, the cabinetry design needs to connect with the builder’s plan: finished floor level, wall positions, sockets and extraction routes all affect the final fit. Agree who is responsible for each task and when the room will be ready for measurement and installation.

You do not need a finished moodboard. Bring photographs of the room, any plans, a realistic spending range and three things you most want to change. Tell us whether this is a kitchen replacement or part of larger building work. That gives the designer a practical starting point and helps separate essential improvements from optional additions.
