An open-plan kitchen has more than one audience. It needs to work for the person cooking and feel comfortable to someone reading, eating or talking nearby. Decide how much of the working kitchen you want on show: a clear island, a visible cooking wall or a quiet bank of tall doors each creates a different experience.

The most useful starting point is a hierarchy. Identify one or two features to lead the room and let the rest support them. If the worktop has strong movement, simpler cabinetry may give it space. If the joinery is detailed, quieter materials can keep the room composed.

Proportion changes the effect of a finish. A dark colour on a small sample is very different from a full-height wall of cabinetry. A deep worktop edge makes an island read differently from a slender one, even when the surface colour is unchanged. Review the elements at the scale they will occupy.

Consider daylight and artificial lighting together. Preparation areas need useful task light; seating and dining benefit from their own lighting choices. Discuss controls so the room can move from cooking to a quieter evening setting without relying on one bright ceiling circuit.

The best hidden details often matter most: a place for the food processor, drawers that keep heavy cookware accessible, bins beside preparation space, or a drinks area that visitors can reach without crossing the cook’s path. Begin with the things you use repeatedly and build the cabinetry around them.

An island is not a requirement. Where the room is narrower, well-proportioned perimeter cabinetry and a generous table may create a better kitchen. If an island does belong, its working side, seating side and view from the entrance should be designed as one piece.
