( Planning your room )

A modern luxury kitchen can be clean-lined without feeling empty or clinical. The distinction is in the proportions, the warmth of the materials and the way practical storage is absorbed into the room. Posh Design creates contemporary bespoke kitchens from our Birmingham studio, with cabinetry designed for the architecture and everyday use.

Give each elevation a clear rhythm

Begin with the large shapes: tall storage, the cooking area, the sink run and any island. A continuous bank of cabinetry can look calm when its doors and drawers line up intentionally. Breaking that run with too many unrelated widths or finishes can make a simple design feel restless.

Handleless cabinetry needs the same practical scrutiny as a handled kitchen. Try the opening method and consider integrated appliances, heavier drawers and how the grip detail continues around corners. Clean lines should still be comfortable to use.

Use a small palette with real variation

Timber can soften flat-front cabinetry; a quiet stone surface can balance a darker cabinet finish. Instead of making every element a feature, decide which material should carry the room. Look at the amount of each finish, not just the number of samples on the table.

Keep sightlines in mind. In an open-plan room, the kitchen is seen beside the floor, dining furniture and living area. A material repeated in a shelf or a furniture detail can connect those spaces without matching everything.

Make the island more than a centrepiece

An island can offer preparation space, seating, storage or appliances, but combining every function can make the surface crowded. Decide its main job and check how people will move around it when stools are occupied and drawers are open.

A sink on the island can keep preparation sociable, while also making washing-up visible from the room. A clear island puts more work on the perimeter run. There is no universally better arrangement; the choice depends on the plan and what you want to see from the seating area.

Plan the things that disappear

A calm kitchen still needs somewhere for plug-in appliances, food packaging, cleaning products and recycling. Concealed storage works when it is easy enough to use every day. Plan power, appliance ventilation and access before enclosing equipment behind doors.

Lighting deserves the same attention. Useful light on worktops can sit alongside a quieter evening setting, with controls discussed before the room is wired. Bring your plans and favourite references to a free design visit so these details can develop together.

No. A simple handle or pull can sit comfortably in a modern scheme. Choose the opening method for its appearance and ease of use, then carry it consistently through the cabinetry.

Yes. Consider how its proportions and materials relate to the existing room. A contemporary kitchen can sit alongside original features without copying their detailing or obscuring them.

Look at material texture, lighting and the balance of closed and open storage. A considered amount of timber or a softer cabinet colour can add warmth while keeping the overall composition restrained.
